I don’t know about you, but I love this time of year. There is so much to love about summertime. The days are longer, the sun is brighter, and we get to spend some much needed time outdoors after being inside all winter. I personally enjoy laying out to get a little bit of sun, but I know it’s best that I protect my baby from the sun as much as possible.

Protecting your baby from the sun is crucial because of their delicate skin, and if your baby is less than six months old, it’s best to keep them out of the sun all together until they get a little older.
Babies less than six months old have skin that is too sensitive for sunscreen and their skin doesn’t have the amount of melanin that we older babies do, making them more likely to sunburn. So, always use caution with a newborn and keep them out of the sun as much as possible
If you are ready to enjoy sweet summertime with your baby, use these tips to protect your baby from the sun.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SHADE
Staying in the shade is the easiest way to protect your baby from the sun. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors without worrying about the brutal sun rays. The shade is easy to find, so when you are out with your baby, hang out under a nice shade tree or pavilion to keep your baby out of the sun. Keeping baby in the shade is also a great way to keep your baby cool in the summertime.
I think using sunscreen is a must when protecting your baby from the sun, even if your aren’t planning on being out very long. I don’t find the spray on sunscreens to work very well, so I always recommend using a good lotion sunscreen.
I use Water Babies Pure and Simple for my daughter and we love it! I think the key to any sunscreen is to apply it generously and frequently. Weather we are going right down the road to swim, or an hour away to a water park, I always apply sunscreen on my baby before we leave the house.
Then, of course, I apply more before we get in the water and then reapply every 80 minutes as needed.
By far the cutest way to protect your baby from the sun is with an adorable sun hat. This sun hat is great because it has SPF 50 and comes in three sizes to ensure the perfect fit for your baby. The chinstrap helps the hat to stay on and fit comfortably. My daughter loves her sun hat and I love that it protects her cute little head from the sun.
AVOID THE SUN FROM 10-2
Avoiding going in the sun from 10 am to 2 pm, when the sun rays are the strongest, can go a long way in protecting your family from the sun. This can be hard if it’s a family day at the water park, but if you’re simply at the house wanting to get some fresh air, it may be best to wait until the evening to do so in order to avoid the suns harmful rays, plus it will likely be much cooler out.
FLOATS WITH A CANOPY
If your baby loves floating around in the pool, a canopy float is a great option to keep the sun off them! We love this float for my baby because it keeps her cool and secure in the water. She loves floating around and playing with the built in activity center. You really can’t go wrong with a canopy float.
Another adorable way to protect your baby from the sun this summer is with a pair of baby sunglasses. The bright sun hurts my eyes, so I can only imagine how it feels for my baby’s delicate eyes. Strong UV rays can easily damage the eyes of babies and children under 10, so it’s always a good idea to keep a good pair of sunglasses on them.
USE A WINDOW SHADE
It is common knowledge to know that you need to take steps to protect your baby from the sun when you’re outdoors, but some people forget how much sun can get to your baby in the car. The sun can easily shine through the windows of your car and cause unnecessary sun exposure. A window shade for the car will not only help to keep the sun off of your little one, but it will always help keep them cooler in the car.
LONG SLEEVE BATHING SUIT
Last but not least, you can get your baby a long sleeve bathing suit. A long sleeve bathing suit is a great option because the breathable fabric combined with being in the water help keep you baby cool all while keeping your baby safe from the sun. This cute floral one and this adorable zipper one are both great choices that offer great protection from the sun and SPF 50!
Summertime is a great time of year, but it is important not to get so wrapped up in the fun that you forget about protecting yourself and your baby from the sun. With the use of sunscreen, hats, and all the above, I hope that you can relax and enjoy your summer knowing that you are keeping your little one safe from the suns harmful rays!
